DESCRIPTION:What Attorneys Need to Know About Fines\, Costs\, and Restitution\npresented by Andrew Christy \nEvery year\, criminal defendants in more than 150\,000 cases walk out of court owing some combination of fines\, costs\, and restitution—often thousands of dollars. While these financial obligations are often an afterthought\, it can take years or decades for low-income defendants to pay them. In the meantime\, they risk being incarcerated\, having probation extended\, or losing their driver’s licenses. This program will provide lawyers with an overview of the law governing the initial imposition of these financial obligations\, as well as the legal limitations on punishing individuals who are unable to pay. \n1.5 substantive CLE credits \nTo RSVP\, please contact Lori Hagen at hagenl@duq.edu.
