Staff Pick: Pennsylvania Causes of Action

Marble column with the word Pennsylvania etched into the front.

You can’t sue over any minor slight or inconvenience. Any successful case in court has to allege a cause of action, which is a set of facts that the law recognizes as sufficient to justify legal action. A complaint might include multiple causes of action, but if you cannot articulate at least one cause of action in a complaint, then the judge may throw the case out entirely. This is why it is important to know what the causes of action in Pennsylvania are.

Pennsylvania Causes of Action explains the major causes of action under Pennsylvania law. Every cause is broken down into the elements that must be proven for a claim to be valid. Each element in turn is explained in detail, with citations to important precedents covering that topic.

For each cause of action, the book also covers standard defenses against the claim. This is useful information for you when you’re the defendant fighting such a claim, but it is also important to know when you are the plaintiff, so that you can be prepared to counter such defenses. Pennsylvania Causes of Action also explains the typical remedies or damages awarded for each cause of action and the limitations you should be aware of for each cause.

Pennsylvania Causes of Action is written in a clear, approachable manner, which makes it an excellent resource for library patrons starting out their legal actions, whether they have any legal experience or not.
